This dish ranges in colour from dark tan to dark brown black with a hint of blue smoke, has a rolled lip with a small branch inclusion, an even thinness of 4mm across the surface of the dish to the foot, and a mild warp adding to the uniqueness to the piece. Bog Oak is formed when an Oak tree dies, falls, and is submerged in iron rich water - fenland or peat bogs. The natural ebonisation process occurs when water-soluble tannins in the oak react with iron ions (Fe²⁺ / Fe³⁺) in acidic, anaerobic bog water over hundreds or thousands of years to form stable, dark iron-tannate complexes - the fabulous deep brown/near black colour. The oxygen-free nature of the bog water prevents rotting and decay of the timber. Finished in food safe mineral oil.
