Large bowl turned from a spalted Sweet Chestnut biscuit. A biscuit is a disc cut horizontally through a trunk, so the grain is runs vertically through the biscuit and any piece created will be fully end grain turned, which adds extra complexity to the turning processes, but reveals a different figure pattern. This bowl has some lovely spalting patterns, is very light for its size, and has an incomplete, dark branch inclusion. The thickness of the bowl also varies gently as shrinkage occurred during post turning drying. Sealed in food safe mineral oil. Note that while Sweet Chestnut is technically a hardwood (deciduous broad leafed species) it is at the softwood end of the Janka wood hardness scale, meaning this piece is prone to denting if mis-treated.
